FAQ

General

What is TopMod?+

TopMod is a Game Quality Engine that helps studios capture, investigate, and understand issues throughout game development.

It brings gameplay evidence, bug reporting, quality insights, and team operations together in one platform, helping QA, developers, and producers spend less time managing information and more time improving their games.

Why use TopMod instead of OBS or Xbox Game Bar?+

OBS and Xbox Game Bar are great for recording gameplay, but recording alone doesn't give developers everything they need to investigate an issue.

TopMod Capture is purpose-built for game development and QA. It captures gameplay alongside supporting information such as player inputs, performance metrics, and game logs.

Everything connects directly to TopMod, where teams can review evidence, investigate issues, and create detailed bug reports without manually piecing together recordings and technical information.

The difference isn't just what you capture. It's what you can do with it afterwards.

How is TopMod different from traditional bug tracking tools?+

Traditional bug tracking tools help teams manage issues after they've been reported. TopMod helps teams capture, investigate, and understand those issues before they reach development.

By connecting gameplay evidence with technical data and structured QA workflows, TopMod gives developers better information to work with and reduces the back-and-forth often needed to reproduce problems.

TopMod also provides visibility into quality trends, testing activity, and emerging risks across your projects.

How much does TopMod cost?+

TopMod offers transparent, per-user subscription pricing, with monthly and annual billing options.

Our standard plans are designed to give studios access to the platform without complicated pricing or lengthy negotiations. Enterprise pricing is available for organisations with additional requirements.

Visit our Pricing page for current rates and plan details.

Does everyone on our development team need a paid licence?+

Not every member of your studio necessarily needs the same level of access.

TopMod is designed to connect QA teams with developers, producers, and other stakeholders. Licensing options accommodate different ways of working, including teams that primarily capture and manage evidence and those that need to review findings.

See our Pricing page for details on user access and licensing.

Is TopMod suitable for smaller studios?+

Absolutely. TopMod is designed for studios of different sizes, from smaller development teams to large, distributed QA operations.

Whether you have a handful of testers or teams working across multiple projects, TopMod helps establish consistent testing workflows and gives developers clearer, more actionable information.

You don't need a large QA department to benefit from better game quality evidence.

Can we use TopMod alongside Jira and our existing tools?+

Yes. TopMod is designed to complement your existing development workflows rather than replace them.

With Jira integration, your team can continue managing development tasks in familiar tools while using TopMod to capture, review, and prepare the evidence behind reported issues.

How does TopMod help developers fix bugs faster?+

Investigating a bug often means going back and forth with QA to understand what happened, reproduce the problem, or request additional information.

TopMod reduces that friction by capturing gameplay footage, player inputs, performance data, and game logs together.

Developers get more context from the start, helping them spend less time chasing information and more time investigating and resolving issues.

Does TopMod affect game performance?+

TopMod Capture is designed for game testing environments, where accurate performance and responsive gameplay are essential.

It offers GPU-based or CPU-based capture and local processing to minimise overhead while collecting gameplay evidence and technical data.

As with any capture or monitoring software, performance impact varies depending on the game, hardware, resolution, and capture settings.

Can we use TopMod with external QA partners?+

Yes. TopMod supports collaboration between internal development teams and external QA providers.

Studios can organise projects and control access, allowing different teams to contribute evidence, review findings, and work from consistent quality information.

This helps reduce fragmented reporting and gives everyone a clearer view of the issues affecting development.

Where is our data stored, and who owns it?+

TopMod uses North American-hosted infrastructure and provides access controls to help organisations manage who can access their information.

TopMod offers custom storage solutions where users can configure all of their recordings and other Capture data to upload to their own infrastructure and never touch TopMods.

Additional hosting, security, and infrastructure arrangements can be discussed for enterprise customers.

Does TopMod use AI?+

Yes. TopMod offers AI-assisted capabilities to help teams review gameplay evidence, prepare bug reports, and identify potentially related issues.

AI is designed to support your QA team, not replace their judgement. Teams remain in control of reviewing, validating, and submitting findings.

AI usage can be turned off at the organization and workspace level, keeping you in complete control of it’s usage across your projects.

Can TopMod support multiple projects and distributed teams?+

Yes. TopMod is built to support modern game development, where testing and production frequently span multiple projects, studios, and locations.

Organisations can structure their work across separate workspaces and projects, with centralised access to evidence, issues, quality insights, and team activity.

Do you offer demos, onboarding, and enterprise support?+

Yes. We offer product demonstrations to help studios understand how TopMod fits into their existing development and QA workflows.

Our team can also assist with onboarding and implementation. For larger organisations, we offer tailored enterprise arrangements covering additional security, integration, infrastructure, and support requirements.
