Connect your Discord account

The Connections page in Account Settings, with cards for Jira, Slack and Discord.

Before you start

  • Anyone can do this. Linking your Discord account is a personal setting. You don't need to be an admin.
  • Discord must be set up for your team first. A workspace or organization admin has to add TopMod's bot to your team's Discord server. Until then, the Connect Discord button is unavailable. Admins can follow "Connect Discord to your workspace".
  • Join your team's Discord server. The bot can only DM you if you're a member of the server your admin connected.
  • One link covers everything. You link your Discord account once. It works in every TopMod workspace and organization that has Discord set up.
  • TopMod only reads your basic profile. It asks Discord to confirm who you are. It can't read your messages, see your servers or post as you.
The Discord card before any workspace has Discord set up: Connect Discord is greyed out and the card says "Discord isn't set up yet".

1. Open your Connections page

  1. Click Settings (the gear icon), then choose Account Settings.
  2. In the menu, click Connections.
The Settings menu open from the gear icon, with Account Settings highlighted.Account Settings with Connections highlighted in the menu, showing the Jira, Slack and Discord cards.

You can also click Apps (the grid icon) and choose Discord under Communications.

The Apps menu open from the grid icon, with Discord highlighted under Communications.

If you're a workspace admin and your workspace hasn't connected Discord yet, Apps opens Workspace Settings instead.

2. Connect Discord

  1. Find the Discord card. It shows "No Discord account linked" until you connect.
  2. Click Connect Discord.

TopMod opens Discord in the same window. Finish the next step within 10 minutes, or the request expires.

3. Authorise TopMod in Discord

  1. Sign in to Discord if asked. Use the account that's in your team's Discord server.
  2. Discord shows what TopMod is asking for: access to your username, avatar and banner. Click Authorize.

4. Check your account is linked

Discord sends you back to Connections, and you'll see "Connected your Discord account".

The Discord card now says "Connected — you'll receive Discord DMs for notifications, wherever your workspaces have Discord connected." The button changes to Disconnect.

5. Choose which notifications reach Discord

Linking your account doesn't turn on any DMs by itself. Pick what you want:

  1. In Account Settings, click Notifications.
  2. A Discord column now appears next to Email. Tick each notification you want as a Discord DM.
  3. To turn on every type at once, click Subscribe to all. This also turns on Email and Slack.
  4. Click Save changes. You'll see "Notification preferences saved".

Your TopMod inbox still lists everything, whatever you choose here.

Disconnect your Discord account

  1. Go to Account Settings > Connections.
  2. On the Discord card, click Disconnect.
  3. In "Disconnect Discord?", click Disconnect to confirm.

You'll see "Disconnected your Discord account" and you'll stop getting Discord DMs. The Discord column disappears from Notifications. TopMod's bot stays in your team's server for everyone else.

To switch to a different Discord account, disconnect first, then connect again.

Troubleshooting

  • "Discord isn't set up yet" and Connect Discord is greyed out: no workspace or organization you belong to has Discord connected. Ask a workspace or organization admin to connect it, then come back.
  • "Could not connect your Discord account — try again": you clicked Cancel in Discord, or Discord couldn't finish. Click Connect Discord again.
  • "This connection request is invalid or has expired. Please try connecting again.": more than 10 minutes passed, or you reused an old Discord tab. Go back to Connections and click Connect Discord again.
  • "Could not start the connection": wait a minute and try again. If it keeps happening, contact TopMod support.
  • "Could not disconnect. Please try again.": refresh the page and try again.
  • No Discord column on the Notifications page: your Discord account isn't linked yet. Follow the steps above.
  • Linked, but no Discord DMs arrive: check you've ticked notifications in the Discord column and saved. Check you're in your team's Discord server, and that Allow direct messages from server members is on for that server in Discord's privacy settings.
